On The Mend

Last week while Andy was traveling, Sarah woke up multiple times every night and I was exhausted. Being the AMAZING husband he is, he stayed out on the couch in case Sarah came down again on Friday evening. Around midnight, he brought Sarah in and informed me that he thinks she has croup and is having difficulty breathing. So, off to the ER they went. Even though we've experienced it with our other kids, with Sarah we're erring on the side of caution this first time.

After giving her an oral steroid, they sent them both home. She was the BELLE of the Ball in that ER. Waving and hugging each and everyone as she left...her way of saying thank you for their kind service in her time of need. She's making a difference in her own way!

Saturday and Sunday, she'd take many tissues out of the box and then put them back in for future use.

Then, make another bed for herself elsewhere with numerous blankets, water bottles, and books.

She's doing well with some minor coughing fits, mostly when sleeping.

I've mentioned her DIVAish ways of recent and have been trying new "QUICK" hairstyles that I can do to match the sassiness of Miss Sarah. This morning, she was the only one who had school (besides me), so I had a few extra minutes. When lo and behold, her hair is long enough to bestow the awesomest pigtails she had when she first joined our family. Without further ado...

Seriously...NO MORE PICTURES, Mama.

Perhaps if I put my thumb in my mouth, she'll stop.

Aaron Shust, a wonderful Christian recording artist, was blessed with a beautiful boy this past weekend. Michael Aaron was born with an extra chromosome and is having some other medical issues. Aaron writes about their son's birth, the grieving process, and how they are walking God's plan for their lives. "You don't need to know the future, only WHO holds the future."

I know our children have a place in this world. All the children like Sarah, Michael, Mia and Bree, Bridget and Alina, Nadia and Josi, Pudge and Zippy, Leanne and Josie, Ben and Davis, Nella, Mila and Zoya, Joachim and Sofia...all these children are precious gifts who can teach us all something about love, challenges, keeping it simple, forgiveness, and many more.

When Sarah comes down at 6am, crawls into bed and says, "Mama," all the while smacking a Good Morning kiss on my cheek;

Or she wants one more hug at bedtime...

Skills for the Fashion Diva

Once the 5 Christmas events in 10 days were completed, we hibernated at home and spent time organizing closets and dressers. Our focus on the remaining days was to put Sarah through Potty Boot Camp and to our surprise, she took it quite well. We continue to be in pull-ups, but she remains dry mostly throughout the day.

Lately, she's had strong opinions about the clothing I pick out for her to wear and changes her outfits multiple times a day. I've compiled a few visual aids for those who need practice taking off their clothes and acquiring new items for their wardrobe.

Step 1:
When Mom is occupied take off all your clothes and TRY to put on a new shirt. Be Careful because the arms are tricky and they may get stuck behind your back. It's not fun walking around in that manner.

Step 2: If said arms are stuck, shimmy your way around and hopefully a kind friend will remove the vile shirt from your body.

Step 3:
In case the papparazzi appear to snap the obscene photo and keep it hidden for future embarrassment of the clothing debacle, hide your eyes and cover your head. If you can't see them, surely they can't snap a picture of you.

Step 4: Walk upstairs and find new apparel that matches your mood of the day, all the while signing and saying stop to the offending person taking pictures.

After tucking her in for the night, I was working on the computer when she proceeded to bring me the outfit I had laid out for her tomorrow and say, "NO!" So, back up we went and I found another that meets with the DIVA'S approval. If this is what the future has in store, I'm in BIG trouble...

Christmas Day

I find it difficult to put into words the emotions that surrounded Sarah's First Christmas Day, and that it was on a Sunday was even more special. I had to wake each child up, comb through Sarah's rat nest of hair, and then the kids walked downstairs to see what Santa and his elves had left for them.

There were moments that morning when Andy and I looked at our kids and the blessings each one has received this year. Addy, who has taken the role of big sister to the nth degree, and Austin, who in his own way teaches Sarah about the little things in life. And Sarah, who embraces every moment with gusto. Our hearts are overflowing.

I wanted a family photo before church that morning and try as we might, Miss Sarah would not smile, except for the moments we weren't ready.

As we walked into church that morning, our friends said, "This is a very special Christmas for your family, isn't it?" And when we sat in the church pew, those who followed Sarah's story knew this moment had great significance for us.

There was a moment during the service when all the children were asked to come to the front for a story by our children's pastor. Addy and Austin walked down, and Sarah wanted to go also. When she got down front, our friends saw her make a beeline for her sister. Then, Austin moved on the other side of her...and one by one, she reached for their hands. And tears filled my eyes, and the eyes of my friends who watched that beautiful moment unfold before their very eyes. My heart took a picture and captured that moment forever. Then, she stroked Addy's hair, and rubbed Austin's back, and walked back with her brother and sister to sit with HER family.

She is loved.

She has a family.

She will move mountains.
If I have but one monument in this world, it is that of my children.

From Our Hearts To Yours

Our year has been abundantly blessed by our firecracker, Sarah. She has wrapped herself around all of our hearts and those she meets on her merry way.

As we nestled our children in their beds this Christmas Eve, I am so very thankful that I am given a front row seat to the miracle show of Sarah's life. Experiencing her firsts is an amazing way to live this wild, and precious life.

Tomorrow when she experiences her first Christmas, the reason we have this special day, and the love of her family, I will watch her excitement and embrace these special times, capturing them with my camera and my mind's heart.

From our family to yours, may you have a blessed Christmas day.

To the North Pole

It's a magical time when all the stars align, schedules are cleared, and we whisk away for a brief moment in time to celebrate so many miracles. Two weeks ago, we did just that. Andy had an idea and my job was to get all the grandparents to clear the weekend and we journeyed, not too far away, but away to celebrate Addy's birth and Sarah's first Christmas. He had found a Polar Express train ride to take our children on and wanted both grandparents together.

We began with a Christmas Parade in a quaint town that had over 100 carriages of horses marching along the parade route. The weather was a remarkably, balmy 50 and that's a heatwave for Ohio country in December.

Of course, a sunny afternoon isn't complete without a trip to the park.

Finally, we had someone to take a picture of our entire family together.

Later that evening, our family had dinner together. Fresh pizza dough was brought out for the kids to mold and keep occupied while we waited. I looked and marveled at what this past year had brought us.

As Sarah worked her magic around the table from one grandparent to another, my heart was filled with emotion. So much gratefulness and thankfulness and blessings. Our family's support, love, and prayers provided us the foundation to give Sarah a family and her first ever Christmas. We are so very blessed and she is daily teaching us to live in the moment.

Our adventure the next day led us to The Polar Express, which in turn broke down and we had to walk to the North Pole. But, it's the memories, the moments, and the togetherness that matters. And we took pictures with our minds, hearts, and cameras to remember this special time.

I am so very thankful for our family. A memory our kids will cherish.

Traditions

Family importance...the tradition and heritage my grandparents have passed down from generation to generation. The tradition where each member, if able, make their journey back to our hometown for the family dinner, conversations, love, and joy of being together for that one moment in time.

Where hugs and coffee are plentiful, and sharing of the happiness and glass is half-fullness that we have embraced over the past year. My Sarah had her first Thanksgiving in this family, as did other new members we welcomed with open arms. Some through marriage, others by birth. No matter how they have joined, they are embraced with love. My mother counted 54 attended this Thanksgiving. That number has been constant these past years. A testament to the tradition and family importance my grandparents passed down to their children. Their children passed down to their children and so one. Where grandkids are having children of their own, and celebrating those special moments.


Sister knows that Grandma has a soft spot for all that cuteness and will "feed" her at command.

Then after dinner, the kids spread out in chairs watching football, playing video games, or sharing girl stories in their own little way.

My nephews, while older, spend time with the little ones, which makes my heart melt.

No matter where you stand in the circle, you are loved. You are celebrated. You are embraced with open arms. Tradition, family, and the most important of all...LOVE.

The Friday after used to be our Black Friday shopping trip before the madness. Now with the internet and online shopping, we celebrate Addy's early birthday with my family. She'll be 9.

My oldest has embraced her sister and Sarah adores and emulates Addy. Addy includes her in learning about the 3rd grade Cootie Catcher!

She is amazing with Sarah. She can get Sarah to do things, we adults cannot.

Another tradition my mother started was to ice birthday cupcakes with cousins. Sarah saw a cupcake and took a bite before learning the icing is so much better on the cupcake.

The cousins planned a raffle and VIP seating for her party and she could hardly contain herself.

Family Traditions....

The elves made their way back from the North Pole, complete with new ornaments for the tree. After one week with Sarah, Austin's elf was rushed to Andy's ER for neck surgery. He's recovering well, thank you.

And tomorrow, we embark on another tradition. Both grandparents are traveling with us to a "special event" for the night. Celebrating our first Christmas with Sarah and celebrating Addy turning nine.

Traditions, family, LOVE. It's a wonderful thing.

Giving Thanks

I find myself intertwined in the have-to's of life that I neglect this space. Not by choice, but because I need time for myself. It doesn't mean I am not living in the moment, nor capturing these special times with my girl. I am. Sitting on the sofa, watching my girl wrestle with her dad, laughing and smiling, knowing she has him wrapped completely around his finger.

An "early" Christmas party had my Sarah, walking around as if they were all there for her. "Does she ever just sit?" I was asked. No, not so much. She's got to suck the marrow out of every moment, every experience, and make friends with anyone she meets. And we've got front row seats to this marvelous show.

Anyone she shares her space with is blessed with smiles, a wave, and often a hug. Then, her new found friends leave on their merry way, with a smile on their face. Their hearts are lighter, and for that one moment in time, my girl showed them unconditional love.

Yesterday was our first experience with ear tube surgery. She handled the not-eating nor drinking better than I thought.

Sarah has shown her independence by not always appreciating the outfits I have chosen for her to wear. This morning, the big kids had gone to school and she was in her pajamas, while we were waiting to leave for the hospital. I found her in her room putting on pants she chose, a skirt, and a shirt to her liking.

Her affection for Brown Bear continues, so she was reading to all who stopped in her room for questions and vitals. Her comfort item.

The "Being Good and Patient" currency is about used up and she's tired of sitting in the bed. However, Andy and I are quite partial to the "gates" on the side of the bed. Something to think about, just sayin:)

A few more minutes and we walked her to the surgery room. We no sooner checked into the waiting room and she was finished. Another 45 minutes in recovery and we were able to see her.

"She'd be tired and groggy. A little cranky, and won't be able to eat much," were my instructions and information. Miss Sarah ate two bowls of cheerios, cheezits, yogurt, and tacos that evening. She never napped. My trash cans were emptied, Addy's closet was raided, and many tissues were found around the house. My Sarah, going against the grain. Proving everyone wrong.

I am thankful Andy went to Sam's for my coffee addiction. The Tim Horton's is in honor of my friend Jayme, who pronounced her affirmation for Tim Horton's coffee as the greatest.

After much begging and pleading, Andy "allowed" us to put up the tree before Thanksgiving. This is what happens to someone who has never seen a Christmas tree, stockings hung by the mantle, nor stainless steel stocking holders.

Sarah was excited and dancing around when she pulled her new ballerina stocking down off the mantle. A goose egg, a badge of honor, and many more to come. She'll have a Thanksgiving story to tell all.

Thanksgiving is always a reflection time, to be grateful, thankful for our many blessings. Sunday, it dawned on me. A year ago, Sarah was a picture. A little girl without a smile in an oversized pink dress.

Now look at her, a busy, little girl, making her way in the world.

Filled With Gratitude

Everyday is a celebration in our household. Everyday, we are filled with gratitude, blessings, and love. Everyday we see the transformation of what a few short months with a family and love can do. Everyday, we are thankful for our little girl.

I am "thankful" she has learned to find her "snack" in the pantry when she is hungry, spill it all over the floor, and talk to Austin as if she has no clue how the Golden Grahams landed on the floor.

I am thankful that Addy and Austin are daily teaching Sarah new things, and she is proving her Mama and Papa wrong. Tonight when her speech therapist was here, we were writing some words and sounds to work on. When she was playing with Addy, don't you know she proved us both wrong and spoke those sounds. (I'm working on video of her speaking soon, I promise.)

Thankful for my little sprite's spunky personality. In the fast-paced morning, I neglect to take pictures of her in the early morning. By the time she comes home, she looks like she enjoyed her day. Mismatched clothes, hair askew, and so I captured the breakfast of champions, with Miss Sarah turning her head in the "teasing" way she plays.

My little helper, taking the folded clothes up and down the stairs. Putting them in the dirty clothes basket, and distributing other clothes in places I'll find in the next couple months:)

Oh, I wish I could share how this girl has changed our lives and those she is with on a daily basis. Her teachers are continually amazed with her quickness for picking up new concepts. Her classmates treat her as an equal, but are filled with compassion and help her as needed. Daily, we are met with hugs, hellos, and goodbyes when she is in the great places she is.

My Sarah, changing lives, changing perceptions, changing...

I am thankful in another week, we're heading to my hometown. To be in that circle of thankfulness, family, and love. Where a year ago, she was a picture of hope. This year, she is amongst us.

I am filled with gratitude daily. It's the greatest way to live!

Stop The Presses!!!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how she smiles with her eyes closed, as if she's imagining every joyful moment will appear when she opens them and she can hardly contain herself.

I've been trying to find my writing groove this past month. Between the flu, laryngitis, bronchitis, and now a cold all in the last month, surviving the week has been our main focus. The kids have remained healthy until this week, with both girls catching a bad cold. Sarah's pediatrician continues to be amazed with her. She's gained 3 pounds since July and 1/4 inch tall. She's added another tooth in an already crowded mouth, and her heart has no issues. We will be going for eartube surgery in another week. Another new for this mama and papa:) I know it's no big deal, but new to us.

In the last week, Sarah's words have exploded. After Trick or Treat, she said Austin and Addy. She's begun saying her teachers' names, told me to Wake Up, and told her class to Line Up. Every day she is signing and speaking more and more, without prompts. Every day we are celebrating these moments of our little girl.

Last night, I turned on the Christmas music. (I know it's early, but I LOVE it so much and it's a shame to only play it for a mere 30 days out of the year.) Sarah climbed up next to Addy, cuddled, and hummed along.

What a picture! Sisterly bonds. Addy had a sleepover last weekend, and Sarah walked downstairs at 6am, announcing her presence to the late sleepers by turning on all the lights. Andy brought her back upstairs, but she only lasted another hour before she needed to join the party!

It's National Adoption Month, a time to celebrate those who have found families, and to pray for those who are still waiting. Andy and I were talking last night. Our lives have been changed because of this little girl. She walks into a room, restaurant, or store, waving to one and all. She melts their hearts, makes them smile, and brightens everyone's day. And this mama loves when she comes running to me, once she sees me at school.

Ladybug Lovliness

Tonight was Trick or Treat and Sarah had no idea what was going on. She knew Grandpa showed up with his camera and I frantically changed her from the tutu she wore to school into Ladybug Lovliness, complete with adorning footwear.

Austin, the superhero, and Addy as Dorothy completed our trio of Trick or Treaters.

Sarah's cheesing it up for Grandpa. This year was Andy's turn to walk them around and it was COLD! We packed Sarah up in the wagon, complete with a blanket and the big kids wore numerous layers underneath.

Sarah was a hit everywhere she went and landed more candy than the average Trick or Treater. She has that way of melting your heart, as she walks up to the door, excited to pick her next big treasure out of the dish.

Andy got his exercise, taking her in and out of the wagon!

Many candies were tasted early, wrapper and all!!!

And friends, big and small, always stopped to share a kind word with our Sarah. She has that way:) Mostly, I love how our friends have embraced Sarah, celebrated Sarah, and love her. We are blessed.

Another happy note: after trick and treating, we were sitting around the table eating dinner LATE. Sarah noticed my coffee mug with the kids' pictures on it. She said, "Austin," for the very first time. She can say her name, but this was the first she said one of the kids' names. He was proud as a peacock, strutting his stuff around the house. What a family moment!

And so another first for Sarah has come to an end, as she quickly fell asleep once her head hit the pillow. We love you, sweet girl.

Honor

Respect, distinction, and high regard are all used to define the word Honor. Mostly, I prefer the word respect. It's a complex word, difficult for an 8, 7, and 4 year old to understand. But, I want my children to grow up showing respect and honor to those who have served our country. Saturday evening, our family had the most awesome opportunity to pay respect to veterans and servicemen, and our grandfather was among them.

HonorFlight.org is a non-profit organization that honors our veterans by flying them to Washington D.C for the day to visit the memorials celebrating their service and flies them home. It's a long day, but a once in a lifetime opportunity. Andy's family learned of this organization, applied for his 89 year-old grandfather to take part in this honor, and Saturday was his day.

He left the airport around 5:30am, and was due back around 9:15pm. While this was beyond bedtime, it was important for our children to honor and respect those who served, to see those who have made a difference in our lives, our families' lives, and our country. When we arrived, hundreds had already gathered to salute those coming home.

Bagpipes were practicing, hand-made signs were displayed, and EVERYONE was waving the red, white, and blue flag in honor of this great country.

Grandpa was entertaining the kids, while sitting on the luggage terminal. Andy and Austin had one of the greatest honor to hold the American Flag as the veterans walked by from the Cub Scout packs.

This mama was so proud of her men, honoring in their Cub Scout way.
Soon, the crowds mulitplied, chants of USA boomed in the terminal, and the moment arrived. The veterans walked proudly with their Buddy down the aisle, shaking hands and were given hugs for their great service. Grandpa Stirn walked proudly down the aisle and his face glowed as we celebrated his moment in time, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We had to get a group photo of all his family and friends, and then of his daughters.

At the end, the bagpipes played and soon it was still. As the accapella voices rang out and everyone chimed in singing, "God Bless America." And my children were enveloped in their grandparents arms as we celebrated and honored and respected what we witnessed on this late Saturday evening.

What a wild, precious amazing life I've been given. There is so much good happening around us. It's time to seek it out, look for it, embrace it, and celebrate. Thank you to everyone in the Honor Flight organization. What an amazing difference you made in those 80 men on that Saturday evening.

My Little Light

Last Friday, I came down with the flu and when I finally was able to go to school, I had parent conferences and then proceeded to lose my voice for the rest of the week. So, this is my first chance to share a miraculous day today with my friends.

Today, we celebrated the day Sarah was born. It's actually next week, but a family wedding preempted her party to this weekend. Her grandparents, great-grandparents, and cousins arrived to share in her first ever birthday party, a party for her. Some drove down for the weekend and my parents took off for their Florida stay as soon as the party was over. Everyone knew this occasion is a special one. She didn't understand why everyone was here, but became completely consumed with unwrapping and opening each present before her.

After each treasure, she would prance around the room, sharing her delight and enthusiasm with everyone around her.

Even extended "relatives" provided something special for my little girl, in case she ever wants to dress up like a cowgirl.

As with every child, it's the small things that get their attention. Tissue paper and lollipops.

Every day, I count my blessings and say thanks for the joy and excitement she brings us, with her hugs and kisses. She went around sharing her thanks in her very own special way.

Then, it was time for cake. Now, sister LOVES cake. Vegetables, not so much, but the sweets she's all about. So it was cake and I wasn't sure how she would do with the candles. When I sat her in her seat, she dug both hands into the cake before I could catch her.

With the help of Mama, she was able to blow out her candles. I know her wish is to be thankful for the family she's been given.

Before everyone left, we had to get the obligatory child photo. Notice her new shirt? Cake and ice cream everywhere, and no photoshop editing program is THAT good.

The one below is my FAVORITE...look how she is holding her sister and brother's hands in unadulterated joy.

The Great-Grandparents were able to spend some time showing her how the Fridge Phonics works. She LOVES music!!

And then, I remembered to give Owen and Meghan their hats we brought back from Ukraine.

And so the day closed with Miss Sarah conked out for from the celebration.

Celebrating Life

It's 31 for 21: A Challenge to Post 31 days for that Awesomest 21st Chromosome. I'm not attempting the challenge, but, I can still share the happiness, joy, and blessings our little almost -4 brown-eyed wonder has brought us in as many months.

My 21st Century Learner already knowing the proper phone etiquette. She wanted to share the conversation with Addy,

and she's equal opportunity, so Austin needed included in the conversation.

She'll be one long talker when her words come. By the way, we got her new glasses tonight and they stay on!! All night, except for some wrestling, she kept them on.

It's funny how after four months, I'm still asked questions about how we came to adopt and sought her out. How do you explain we were led, even called to adopt? How do you explain we never second-guessed our decision? How do you explain that she's a part of us? Then, every day her teachers, friends, and acquaintances share something exciting that she rocked their world, their perceptions. My little Sarah, changing lives.

She was wound up by the time I got home (unbelievably swamped these next two weeks)

I even had the big kids sorting and filing for me tonight!

, and was running through the house with that LOOK! Between Andy and I, it was 20 minutes of getting her in the bath. Until she found a way to cool off...

Yes, she realized that the water is cool like a swimming pool and would lower herself down and up, multiple times while we erupted in laughter. I know it's not proper toilet-training etiquette, but C'est La Vie!!

The Lives We Touch

We've all been there. That overwhelming, knot, panic feeling that begins swirling in the pit of your stomach, then rises from the depths until the choking sensation appears with every activity, have-to's, and meetings that come with daily life. It is at that moment I come to my blogosphere of happiness, therapy, and peace when I read about others' joys, celebrations, and glass is half-full mentality. Today, I'm at that point of panic with work and family deadlines looming in the week ahead. It is here I remember how we touch lives without truly knowing the impact we have.

Last week in my class of treasures, I read the book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes. An engaging book that shares the celebrations of one, tiny mouse and her way of feeling special. After recess, a petite, brown-haired, sprite made me my very own Paper Pink Purse, inscribed with her name. I celebrated the connection, and rocked that arm-candy as if it were made by Mr. Coach himself. When I walked into the office to share, my principal said, "Shelly, I need to tell you a story. Last year, L came in March from India and didn't speak any English. In fact, she wrote a different child's name on her every paper. She didn't have any knowledge of what her name looked like in English. Now, she is writing her name and speaking English." Celebrations come in all shapes and forms, even a Pink Paper Purse, that is honored on my white board art gallery.

Last evening, I received an email from a girl I taught 5 years ago. We connected on an entirely different plane. She began writing me letters through the year, even though she seemed meek and wanted to fly under the radar. She wrote me about the death of her grandmother, the move that would take her family across the country, and we had a traveling journal between her and I that year. On her last day, I wrote my last letter and gave her my home email. As with all correspondence, the emails became less frequent as our different journeys took different paths. One night, she found that notebook, saw my email address, and wrote me a letter. Red Threads connect us all, they may tangle and weave but never break.

I never thought many would read it besides family. Every so often, a friend or acquaintance stops to ask me a question, or tell me they read my thoughts the other day. So it's with my words I can make a difference for someone.

I may never know the difference, the impact I make on every life I touch. But, daily I try to be present with the moments. I fail often, when the pressure of day to day life grabs hold. But, tomorrow's a new day and the sun will shine again.

We decided to make some changes in our home. More time for connection and I'm seeing the positives already. Austin is playing Bookworm (a making words game) on his DS.
Addy is engrossed in a new series and our library adventure in the rain tonight ensured she had the next book, along with another series I think she will like.

Sarah is finally enjoying the 30 minute Signing Time videos and moving her hands along with Rachel! Hurray, Hurray, Hurray! She's been given her first invitation to a friend birthday party on Saturday. What a proud moment for this mama when I picked up her mail from her mailbox and saw the invitation. I can hardly wait myself!

And it's time to figure out our Halloween Costume for this year. We're starting early, so the online stores don't run out. Our 8pm hours are filled with games of Go Fish, Dominoes, and math games.
So change is good!

Our Weekend

It began Friday evening, with a divide and conquer team effort for Andy and I. After school, I picked up Sarah and made an appearance at my school event, and then met Andy and the kids for dinner. He's been fighting a cold, so we were looking forward to a hibernating Saturday.

Sarah was raring to go at 6am on a Saturday. To my dismay, I could not get her back to sleep and so I was up pretty early. After a late breakfast and lunch, I laid her down for a nap and Andy was trying to sleep as well. She woke up writhing in pain. After I changed her and got her settled down, she woke up screaming and pushing on the lower quadrant of her abdomen. This wasn't normal, so Andy drove her to Children's Close to Home to be checked out.

An hour later, he's calling me while driving downtown(where I was earlier that week) to the ER because she needed more tests. And since cell phones do not work in hospitals, I had to rely on text messages from him.

At one point, a resident told Andy her intestines are all knotted together and my mind was going to the "nth" degree, making plans for my kids to spend the night at my friends. From the sound of the things, she was going to be admitted.

My mind was foreshadowing what we would encounter later that evening. I was waiting, bags were packed, I had a plan for the next two days, and knew we would get through whatever we would face. I waited, ~~patiently,~~ for the next text message from him. I googled with information that I did have, and my family was praying.

Then, a text message later, she's severely constipated (I know, TMI) and will be coming home shortly. How can you go from knots to constipation in a couple of hours? After 7 hours away, an IV stick, labs drawn, x-rays, and sticks, it was confirmed she needs to be on miralax daily. When they got home( minus a token escapade again), Andy could hardly speak from his cold, ate a quick dinner, and then headed to the airport to pick up his parents at 11:30pm:( From what I can gather, an over-zealous resident didn't feel her abdomen and the attendant was the one who caught it.

So, Sunday we never left the house, vegged, and caught ourselves up for the week ahead. At least now, everyone is on the mend. Life is good!

We did learn tonight that there's a mild abnormality in her neck and she's restricted from activities like trampoline (which she loves), tumbling and gymnastics until the next x-ray in 6-12 months. And so our future Mary Lou Retton may need to find another avenue to release her energy. Still, our glass is half-full. We're smiling, loving every moment, and cherishing those special times,

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

Tomorrow's A New Day

This morning, I packed the stroller in the car, the doctors' orders for Sarah's tests, and printed off directions for the hospital downtown. (the third time because I keep hoping not to have to go down there.) My sub plans were ready and my morning went flawless.

Once I left school, I realized I forgot some Sarah snacks for the inevitable waiting that will take place in the doctor's office once we arrive. After my Starbucks run, I stopped in Wal-greens to pick up something to keep her occupied. A few for her Mama, too.

Hey, they were on sale! Next stop, I picked up Sarah in different clothes than I brought her in. She got wet on the playground and needed to be changed. In the car, she went and I prayed she would sleep the drive downtown. She's unbearable without a nap! Looking back, I saw this and was thanking the heavens. Hindsight, the mere catnap would not be enough for the foreshadowing of events to come.

Now, driving downtown is measured a close second to going to the dentist in my world. I don't do it very often, I'm easily misguided in directions, and I get freaked out in all that traffic. But, mapquest was in my hands.

Then, I see my turn off is closed to get onto another highway. In my head, I'm preparing a dissertation to the doctor once I see her about how she will need to see me in another location or I'll find another doctor! Finally, a thankful sign I see as the bright orange detour leads me in the direction I'm headed. Off I go, and I find my way to the hospital.

Next trial is navigating in a parking garage, trying to find a spot. Another check mark in my day is going fine. I wake Sarah up and we roll on in. We were early, ( one of my mantras), and so I tried to get her in for the x-ray beforehand. The paperwork was complete, but the secretary didn't want me to miss my appointment, so she'd hold it for us until we came back.

Up two floors and I walked into an office of wall-to-wall adults and children, with screaming kids all around. I signed us in and Sarah's holding up well. We wait and wait. Fifteen minutes later, I'm called up to the desk and find out we were to be at another location. I can hardly hear what the attendant is saying. They're trying to help me reschedule, but computer issues were in full-bloom and the screaming in the office was more than I could take. Finally, a rescheduled appointment later and we're on our way downstairs.

We waited almost an hour for an x-ray and she entertained herself by reading to the other patients, making sure to show them the pictures like her teachers do! She was amazing standing still for the x-ray and ekg. Next stop, home.

But, oh, the parking garage token situation. I needed to get a token from the machine, who last time ate up more dollars than it should. Once again, it took another dollar. So, I asked the information desk how to get a token and she pointed me to the same machine that took my money. A few tries and a token in my hand, I asked how to get back the money it took. "Maam, you'll need to talk to somebody on first shift."

And I was done. I got her in the car, frantically tore open a box of Mike and Ikes, and dumped half in the backseat for her to eat while I drove. At one point, she was dancing and laughing, while sticking her tongue out to the many cars that passed us by. I'm sure the sugar high was part of her happy disposition.

I needed to stop in Target and the library before heading home, and after the library the winds of Sarah changed and the meltdown began in full force. She was tired of sitting and being constrained and wanted everyone to hear of her day's misfortune.

Once we arrived home, I read her daily notes from school and it seems I sent in the wrong letter item for the week, need to complete a 32 page questionnaire, and she's on snack duty all next week. And so the day went. A few more meltdowns at dinner and Sarah was sleeping by 6:30pm, put her jammies on at 7, and she's out for the night.

Tomorrow's another day ,folks, the sun will be shining, and Sarah will be smiling away. Until then, I got some new crime dramas to enjoy on Tivo.

Today, She Walked

Today, she walked. Metaphorically speaking, because there was absolutely, positively no way I was going to let her walk free without constraints in the massive crowds celebrating the extra chromosome. So, she stroller walked for those like her, and those who have yet graced this earth.

So much sisterly love in our home!

What a difference a year makes. Last year, The Buddy Walk was later, colder, rainier, and dreary. All we had of Sarah was a picture, but we walked in her name.

Today, the sun's rays cast a brilliant halo around Crew Stadium, and Sarah was with us in person. Casting her bright halo of smiles for all around.

I'm so cute!!!

One of our first stops after registration (No, we weren't organized to get a team going this year!) was to sign a pledge to end the R-word.

. Next up, we listened to the opening remarks and the emcee sing "When the Saints Go Marching In" with his jazzy trumpet. During his rendition with lyrics dedicated to all the buddies out there walking today, my eyes welled up to see so many celebrating what other countries view as a lesser life.

Then, we walked up and down the stadium for a mile. We met families along the way, asking Sarah's age. And the smiles abound in multitudes as we looked at our individuals for who they are.

Hmmm, what mischief should I get into next?

The Specs4Us had a booth at the walk, so Andy was able to get Sarah fitted for glasses and ordered her frames right there. For those in the market for glasses for individuals with Ds, this company makes them to fit their unique faces. We should have them by the end of the week, and our eye doctors will fit the original lenses to these frames.

There were games and bubbles, and the kids enjoyed the fun day.

The other day, I asked Addy and Austin what their favorite part of Sarah is... HER HUGS. She gives the greatest, best hugs.

Later that day, we had our small group from church over to celebrate her into our family. We have tried so many times to get dates lined up, but today was the day. They came and she performed her smiles and sassiness for all to see.

It was a busy day, but one filled with love, smiles, and celebration for lives filled with love.

We are so very blessed, and our days are filled with laughter and smiles.

These Moments

To say the beginning of school is busy is an understatement. Add multiple curriculum nights, the kids' activities beginning, Sarah's meetings, Andy's travel schedule, and these past weeks have been a blur. Every year at this time, I do something that tells me I need to slow down. One year, I scheduled a substitute for the wrong day. This year, I took Addy to a meeting that wasn't until next week. Poor Sarah is crashing in bed around 7:30pm from her new school schedule, but we are surviving. So when Andy texted me the Thursday before Labor Day about a quick over-nighter up north, I jumped at the chance for all of us to get away.

The trip was one comedic error after another from the moment we started the journey until we arrived back home, but the kids enjoyed themselves and we left the cluttered home and work schedules behind for a brief 24 hours.

The weather was cold and rainy, but that did not stop our kids from living in the moment and celebrating our time together.

Sarah enjoyed her first time at an amusement park, and was thrilled when we found rides that she could go on.

Thank you to all who emailed me about a website for glasses that are designed specifically for kids with Ds. The ones we ordered from the doctor do not stay on, so we'll most likely be ordering another pair. We're learning:)

Sarah's adjustment to the preschool is wonderful. I was able to meet her teachers at curriculum night and share her story. They were apologetic about the red marker that was all over her clothes when she came home. My response,"Clothes are replaceable. Experiences aren't. Everything is new and she loves to try and experiment!"

On this day of remembering, my heart is filled with gratitude on so many levels. I was teaching first grade ten years ago, Andy was in another state, and I was scared to bring a child into this world, where something like that could happen.

Until I heard the words, "If we live in the state of fear, we let them win."

One year later, Addy was born.

Seventeen months later, Austin came into the world.

Seven years later, we crossed the globe and lived in another country for seven weeks to bring home Sarah.

Our gifts, our blessings, our love. Our glass is always half-full, knowing we are bountifully blessed with our family and friends. May you all celebrate the gifts you've been given and be filled with gratitude, no matter how big or small.

Gratitude...it's a wonderful thing.

My Sarah

Sarah bloomed like we knew she would in her new place, but melted down when she wasn't able to get on the bus with her friends. Next week, sweetie!

An AHA moment came this afternoon when I picked her up. Another couple was touring her daycare, as I was leaving. I had only strapped her in her carseat, when they came over to my car.

"I know this is awkward, but we're interviewing daycares and we have a little girl with Down syndrome. What do you think about this one?"

And so Sarah's story was shared and I could only shout praises for the accommodations, the flexibility, and their love for Sarah.

I said, "She is loved and that is all a Mama wants for her child."

We talked about IEP's, and the school district preschool. They are one year behind us, and were surprised to learn Sarah had only been in the country since Memorial Day. I'm learning quickly, they said. One day at a time, that's all.

Paving the way for another child with something extra, my Sarah. Oh, she is changing lives, making her way in this wonderful world.

Oh, the blessings she is sharing. Her daycare teachers told me one of her friends was playing by himself when she went over, took his hand, and they played together. Another time, she led another friend to the group area. The adults' hearts melted and the kids are seeing her as one of their own.

This I See

When I was four, my mother took me to the doctor for an eye exam. Afterwards, the doctor informed her that I was severely near-sighted and would need glasses. My mother cried the entire ride home. She had worn glasses most of her life and didn't want that stigma on her four year old child.
In her words, "Devastated."

This was circa 1975 and the technology was not as advanced, so my lenses looked like coke bottles, and continued until high school when I was given contacts. I don't remember that early glasses time, but the way I looked at the world changed. I could see. The colors, details, and shapes.

My father's time to choke up came later when I said, "Dad, did you know the grass is green and so are trees?" It gripped him because he didn't know I couldn't see.

Fast forward many years. A few weeks ago, I took Sarah for her eye exam. My utopia was in full bloom with my rose-colored spectacles because she had sailed through her other medical workups with only some ear issues. Another appointment and then we'll be finished with her post-adoption workup.

So when the doctor informed me that Sarah was very far-sighted and her eyes were working very hard to focus, my heart plummeted. I was thrown for a loop, socked in the stomach. Similar to my mother's reaction. I didn't cry, but was silent the entire way home. It's not the wearing of glasses, but the fact that I didn't know she was having trouble seeing. I didn't know she was struggling. I didn't know, and feel I've failed her. (Irrational, I know. But, I'm a mom.)

Andy wasn't at all surprised. "Shelly, I see glasses on kids with Ds all the time. I was expecting a prescription for glasses for her and our other kids soon enough." Again, I live in my "glass is half-full, utopia."

But, now she can see and they add to her spunky personality. And her lenses are thinner than mine ever were. The miracles of new technology. Her flat, button-shaped nose isn't enough to hold them up, so it'll be a challenge to keep them on. Any suggestions?

We're working a few hours at a time, and soon she'll be wearing the finger-smudged specs full-time.
I wonder what she would have said (if she had her words) the first time she put them on. What does she see differently?

Andy went to her IEP meeting yesterday, and there was one transportation issue that was our only concern. Before the meeting, we were notified that Sarah could attend the school Addy and Austin attend or another school in the same district. Our hearts and prayers were praying for the first option all week long.

When I walked into the door after school, Andy said, "You are not going to like what I'm going to tell you." Then, I knew. She would be attending the other school. He shared with me the entire process, how everyone at the table wanted her to attend her home school, but the transportation routes are complicated and we need her to be picked up at her daycare. So, the other option it is.

I wallowed for an evening. Wondering, why? This school is our family. We skyped into classrooms while in Ukraine. They followed our process. Staff and teachers alike knew of our Sarah. When she walked through their doors after she was home, there were tears. Tears to see the miracle she is. She was home. Even the kids' classmates know of Sarah, and give her shout-outs in the hallways. Our home and family, and we wanted Sarah to be a part of that preschool.

But, today I know she is to shine her light in a new place. Her daycare has seen what a miracle she is and what she can do. Every day, she receives shout-outs as she walks the halls to her room. She is loved.

And she will be loved in her new school. Tomorrow, she begins the next chapter in her story.

One Year Ago, Today

One year ago today (August 24th), our world changed. One year ago, on this very day, our family jumped off a cliff without looking down, a leap of faith. One year ago, this picture rocked our world, and we could not forget what we saw, what we knew.

A spark was lit to mark our way that would carry us through the next nine months of paperwork chasing, waiting, and unknowns. Over the next six months, we received another picture of Sarah, and a video.

On this very day...

Sarah did not know she had a family coming for her, she followed her daily routine. Awake at 7am, breakfast at 8, lunch at 12, nap until 3, snack at 4, supper at 7, and bed at 9. Day in, day out, she followed this pattern.

Until, April 13, 2011. She walked into her teacher's room, amidst adults she did not recognize and had freedom to play with all the toys for a brief ten minutes, while a couple marveled at the beautiful sight their eyes beheld.

On this very day, her world was shaken to the core. She now had a Mama and Papa who came every day for seven weeks to visit her. She became a rock star in her orphanage, with daily visitors.

That on May 26, 2011, her Papa walked her out of the orphanage gates for the last time to the other side.

Where her family waited with open arms to love her.

The change a few short months with us is remarkable. She looks so very different, safe, secure, and loved.

One year ago today, our world changed and we cannot imagine life without Sarah. Look at her. She is changing lives, changing perceptions, and changing the world for better.

One year ago, on this very day...

Our family began the journey to give a little girl a new life and love she never knew.

We are learning as we go. Taking one day at a time. As her mama, I run over in my mind, "Should I have done more reading, working with letters and numbers?"

Then, I step back and realize. Three months and look at her. She's accomplished so much, experienced many life-changing and new adventures, and she's made friends. She'll get there, but we'll take it one day at a time. Knowing every day, every moment is a miracle.

For now, we celebrate on this very day, Sarah found a family.

And her family FOUND her. Her family FOUND her.

Everyday is a miracle.

Remembering the Good

This morning, I began my first official day of school. It's convocation, where the entire district meets for one giant pep rally, and to see friends from other school buildings. My friends wanted to hear about Sarah and her celebrations, when someone said,"Your blog is always so happy. You're going to the park, playing with kids, having a good time. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I read your blog." Yes, I do celebrate the good things. I focus on the positive and write about what I want to remember. Our family has its moments. The house can be trashed, appointments and errands run here and there, Sarah throws tantrums, and the kids are fighting.
But when I think about the day, I remember the good. I am blessed.

Sarah's new friends rallied around her the next day we arrived at school. As she was searching for her first activity of choice, one spunky blondie said, "She doesn't have her words yet," and without a moment's hesitation Miss Emily said, "Her words aren't here yet, but they're on their way soon."

Think about that. It's a way for 3 or 4 year olds to understand individual differences.
"They're not here yet, but they're on their way soon."

Then, that afternoon, Sarah walked into her home, waving her arms and said, "Hi." Unscripted, unprompted, spontaneous because those are the words one says when you greet someone. She's learning. Everyday, she's learning something new. Her words are on their way soon.

We had her home visit from the school psychologist and the play-based assessment, but our IEP meeting won't be until the end of the month. All the therapists, intervention specialists, and supervisors were amazed at what Sarah can do in the 2 1/2 months she's been in the U.S. When I shared she was the only child with Down syndrome in her groupa, one therapist said,"You make a good argument for full inclusion." My Sarah, already changing perceptions.

As a mama, I'm on my own learning curve about her needs, instruction, and IEP's. A different viewpoint, for sure.

The early awakening is making for an easy bedtime transition. At the beginning of her new life in our home, Sarah needed us to lay down beside her bed until she fell asleep, otherwise she would not stay in her bed. (We tried everything!) Soon, it was only 10-15 minutes, and now she's asleep within 5 minutes of us standing outside her door. My little girl has found her home, her place to feel safe, her family.

Austin chooses to sleep in a sleeping bag so that he doesn't need to make his bed in the morning. He is the first one to fall asleep.

Addy, my tween, will fight sleep to the bitter end. After an hour of laying in bed, she was still awake, although not fond of the flash.

We're adjusting to the new schedule, and next week, the big kids will begin. And so the cycle continues. Have a wonderful weekend, and remember to celebrate the many blessings you've been given. Celebrate the moments with your family, and live life to the fullest.

First Day of School

The sun's rays were shining through our windows and casting a sunbeam halo over Sarah, as she slammed the bedroom doors upstairs announcing to the world she's awake. She knew something special was in store for her, but didn't know what it was. Today, she began her first day at one of the schools she'll attend this year.

Dressed in purple with flipflops on her shirt ( a salute to the summer days), she walked confidently, like she owned the place, down the hall, and was welcomed with love from her new friends and her teacher, Miss Emily.

She walked down the vibrant halls, decorated with artwork, smiles, and love. A contrast to the dark, dreary corridor that she walked the first three years of her life.

The girls were celebrating their matching skirts, and showing off their fancy duds, excited to meet their new friend. Sarah walked around the room, exploring the small tables and chairs, and couches, and her new friends grabbed some books to read with her.

We are filled with gratitude that she has the same teacher Austin had a few years ago when he attended the school. Miss Emily and I hugged like old friends, welcoming the new daily routine we'll share by greeting each new day with smiles and joy. Love spilled out from both of us with the endless possibilities Sarah will have.

I gave my mom schpeal. She is working on going to the potty, and tends to initiate it when other friends go. She may eat some crayons, and other non-edible items, but I don't need a call every time she does that. LOL. She knows a few signs, and communicates with gestures and facial expressions. Everything is new, every experience, manipulatives, everything. She'll jump in with reckless abandonment.

Then, she asked the question all Mamas and Papas want to hear. "What are your expectations from me? What do you want from me to help Sarah?"

"All I want is for her to be loved. She'll make her way." At that moment, both our eyes turned misty.

Miss Emily said, "That will most definitely be a given." My little butterfly bloomed today, and will be blossoming every day.

During our conversation, I learned another little girl will be in Sarah's classroom. Another little girl, with something extra in her makeup. I can hardly wait to meet her parents. Another friend.

"All I want is for her to be loved."

After I kissed her goodbye, she continued in exploration as if she has always been a part of the group, her friends, her place without another glimpse of her mama walking away.

The note on her daily report when I picked her up. "Sarah had a GREAT day! She made many new friends, and went to the bathroom on her own! Sarah was very playful and warmed up to our classroom and friends so easily! Yay!!"

I guess you take Mama out of the mix, and she'll do everything in her own time.

So, Miss Sarah has found a brand new place to grow, to learn, to love, and to celebrate.

She came home sat on the couch to read:)

Breathless

Today was my last Friday of summer. Wishing I could sleep in, but couldn't. I was awake at 7am, without a wakeup call from my little sprite crawling into bed, followed by my middle child.

I hopped out of bed, followed by a jolt from the java that gets the juices pumping. Andy surprised me with this fabulous new mug. He had a coupon!

My windows are open, sunbeams bursting through the blinds, and I'm reveling in these last few moments, sucking the marrow out of life. (Thoreau quote, I don't need to trampse in the woods like my husband:) I have my own ways of living in the moment.

Janus, the Greek god of beginnings and transitions, looking at the past and towards the future. I'm torn between my two sides. The one side that is filled with anticipation of the possibilities the new school year brings for my children and as a teacher...the future. But the other is wishing the sands of time would pause to savor the last few moments of this first magical summer with Sarah. The past and present. So many little gifts and blessings to be celebrate.

Her smile says it all, doesn't it?

A Cinderella story, like no other. So many possibilities are waiting for her this year. Possibilities a few months ago weren't even an option, but one look at her and she's our Cinderella Miracle. Sometimes I watch her and think, "What will her year look like? What will she accomplish?" I know she will be loved in both schools she will attend. She is constantly in motion, waiting for the next adventure, something new to experience, and never is one to sit and watch time fly by. She sucks the marrow out of every moment. She begins her daycare/preschool on Tuesday. She is ready, a sponge waiting to soak up and learn.

Addy and Austin are excited for their new year to begin, to see their friends daily, and to see their little sister at school. A few big kids adventures to complete before I go back to work.

Roughing it with Dad...

August signals summer drawing to a close and the start of a new school year, so this past weekend (while Sarah and Shelly danced) Addyson, Austin and I celebrated with our annual almost-time-to-go-back-to-school camping trip.

OK, eating s'mores around the campfire may not be what Thoreau had in mind, but it's a chance for the three of us to "unplug" for a few days and that's good enough for me. Of course, "unplugged" is a relative term these days as the kids got to play DS in the car and I got busted a couple times for playing "Angry Birds" on my phone in the tent. But hey, I said we were camping, not Amish!!! :)

Special thanks to our new friends at Dayton Tall Timbers KOA for providing a great camping experience. This was by far the cleanest, most well-maintained campground we've visited so far. The kids loved the pool and playground, and I appreciated the convenient location. The kids are already planning their trip back there next year, since we missed out on the hayrides and train. They even have Kabins and Lodges, so maybe Mom and Sarah will consider joining us next year? We'll see...

The pool was a big hit, but both kids will tell you that their favorite part of the weekend was playing mini-golf.

On Sunday, we stopped on the way home to visit Clifton Mill and took a hike through Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve near John Bryan State Park.

The shaded trail and sounds of rushing water provided welcome relief on a hot August day. We found ourselves wondering what we would find around the next bend in the trail. A big green caterpillar waiting to transform into a magnificent butterfly? A fallen tree that would act as a perfect balance beam?

The anticipation of the next great discovery compelled us forward along the trail. I can't wait to watch Addyson, Austin and Sarah use that same sense of adventure as they encounter the challenges and opportunities of a new school year.

Just Dance

Last night, Sarah and I celebrated the wedding of my friend. Melanie was beautiful, Joe was handsome, and their love showed throughout the night.

Sarah knew we were getting dressed to the nines for something special. When I picked her up at Gradma's, changed her into party clothes, she pranced around the room, twirling and spreading her dress like wings. I had painted her fingers and toes, and she loves to get all "girly-ed" up.

When we finally arrived at the reception (my directionality issues bloomed in full force), she walked into the hall, waving to everyone she passed, as she traversed the tables to her seat.

Sarah made her debut with more of my friends that night, she batted her eyes, shared a flirty smile, and their hearts melted instantaneous. She sat very lady-like in her chair, during the dinner, entertaining her tablemates and they entertained her with flowers, crackers, and smiles. And cookies. The Italian Cookie table was so delicious!

The dance floor soon opened up, and Sarah, the Rock star, came to life. I play music in the house, but only in the last few weeks has she begun moving to the music, clapping in the car, and seat-dancing. (Again, perhaps its due to clearing her ears out?)

So, when she was freed from her seat, heard the music, Sarah bee-lined her way, in and out of the tables (waving as she walked) onto the dance floor to join the Cha Cha dance.

She watched the dancers' movements, turned when they turned, slid when they slid, and clapped. Oh boy, did she clap. One-by-one, my friends celebrated Sarah, dancing with her, loving on her, and enjoying Sarah.

There was more dancing, more Sarah celebrating, and more laughing. We laughed, over and over, how one little girl could rock the night out on the dance floor. Each time, someone commented, "I can't believe how outgoing, and social she is." My overwhelming response,
"We are very blessed." And we are.

Everyday, I celebrate the blessings we've been given. God is good and Sarah is a daily, walking miracle of what love can do. She shows everyone that each moment is a precious gift. Live in the moment and dance.

Sarah, I pray you will always dance to the music, teach others to dance, and to love.

I know you will always take the time to dance.

Making The Most of Today, Life's Little Surprises, Enjoy the Journey, One Day At a Time, and there are many more that I read. Their words inspire anyone who reads them that every day is precious.

My uncle was rushed to the hospital a week ago, while he was having a heart attack. Today, everything is looking good and has a follow-up in three months.

I met my friend, Kecia, in Ukraine during our adoption process. She didn't think she would be able to have anymore children, adopted Mia, and now is expecting twins to make a family of eight. Going from Five to Eight in a year. Amazing!

My friend, Amy, of One Day At a Time, wrote me today. "Love first, Baby. It's an incredibly, humbling thought!"

We live a a couple miles from the best zoo in America, but we haven't made it there with Sarah. So the weather was cooler, the sun was shining, and off we went.

Sarah was okay in the stroller until it was time for the Habitat Hollow, and then she was ready to roll. The big kids were climbing over the words, Shelter, Food, Water, and she followed, holding Mama's hand, of course.

She loved the freedom of exploring, every nook and cranny in the house. But, Little Sister was not happy to be put back in the stroller.

She enjoyed the barn, getting down close to look at the animals. Seeing her wide-eyed wonder of amazement at every creature today, convicts me to not take anything for granted. Looking at everything through new eyes, new experiences with her is a precious gift.

Then, we took the train ride. Since we couldn't all sit together, she wanted Addy and Austin to feel loved, so she high-fived them before the ride began.

There is so much excitement, bubbling out of her and she knows something electrifying is about to happen, and she's sharing "I'm so excited to be out of the stroller" face with the rest of the passengers. When we would pass the crossings and people were waving at the train, she'd wave back and knew they were all waving, just for her. Hooping and hollering with thrills.

But, the aquarium and manatee buildings were another of her favorites.

Getting up close to the glass, touching the starfish, and I watched the attendants go out of their way to bring shells and other items closer for Sarah to touch. And my heart was filled with hope and joy, to see others recognize the heart of Sarah. To know she was eager to experience this new moment in time.

She followed Addy wherever Addy went, did whatever she did, and wanted to be like her Big Sister.

She loves her family, her brother and her sister, and seeks every opportunity to hug them.

Loving Life...

Abounding Love

I've got a few spare moments, where the kids are downstairs playing. The coffee pot is almost empty, and we're a few shy hours of embarking on our pool adventure with friends, sucking up the last few moments of the summer. Making the most of the todays.

My Sarah...
She's got one speed when she wakes up in the morning, and it's GO. It's as if she knows the hours are fleeting and she's got to live every moment with gusto, exploring and seeking out adventure in every cupboard, room, and drawer. While I'm not a tv or screen fan for my kids, this Mama would shout to the heavens if she would be entranced with a 30-minute Signing Time DVD. Some prayers are simple ones, these days:)

Yesterday, I took the kids to my new school and we lasted less than an hour. She had used Sharpie on herself, a book, whiteboard, and clothes. FYI, anti-bacterial soap does wonders for permanent marker on skin. The most hilarious moment was when she discovered the automatic anti-bacterial dispenser. Every time she place her hands under there, she hollered with excitement at the present bestowed on her hands. This continued multiple times and each time, her elation showed on her face when the sudsy, white foam appeared. It's as if gifts flowed freely in that mounted gray dispenser.

After her bath one night, she climbed on my lap and I took self-portraits of her and I. She sat there, each time excited to see her picture on the back of the camera.

I love the black and white/sephia photos. They show emotion, love, and gratefulness I feel when I look at how she has grown, emotionally and physically. My little girl...

This week, we are appointment free. Her dentist appointment showed no cavities, and look amazing. A praise! Other than a pill for her thyroid, she's healthy and a healthy weight. Next week, she has a follow-up pediatrician appointment and a HOPEFUL, accurate hearing test. Since her ears were cleared, she's more verbal and speaking more words.

Oh, how we can't imagine our life without this little girl. She completes our family, her busyness and her love. I am continually blessed to be her Mama, to hug, to love, and to celebrate all she has to show the world. I find myself, thinking of her future like Addy and Austin. What difference will she make in the world? Already, I see the lives she has touched, who see she is more alike us than different. Imagine a world if we could see the heart of the person first? Imagine...

Farewell, my friend, July. You're one of the longer months of the year, but you fly by as a super-sonic jet. I will miss you and know it won't be long before the lazy, summer mornings will be over. But, now, I revel in the time I have with my family. So many first for my little girl in July.

Grandma came into town for a few days. As she was singing a song to Sarah, Sarah began singing along with her. My mom would say, "Sarah sing." And she would.

This little girl is ready to learn all the world has to offer her. This morning, Miss Patty said, "Shelly, she's ready for school. From where she began in Bible School to where she is now, is AMAZING what she will accomplish once she's in school." And I've got her schooling figured out as much as I can until her evaluations with the school. It's a place where she will blossom under the care of the same teacher who taught Austin.

Andy was gone all week for business, and we celebrated with a Saturday afternoon at the pool. I was able to capture these moments, watching Sarah walk as far as she could up to her mouth before turning around. Addy and Austin, diving for treasure. All of us together.

A special shout-out to my Uncle Doug. This week, he was rushed to the hospital amidst a heart attack, is home, and celebrating his family, their love, and their faith.

We had a library in our front room, the one that had roof damage in the spring. We had a couple of computers, one for the kids and one for me. However, Miss Sarah would sit on the chair and play with the keyboard. And so, Andy created a space in my bedroom, away from the noise and little fingers.

Beauty Everywhere

I was sitting at my computer writing, when I looked out the front door window and noticed the spectacular skyline Mother Nature was gifting me tonight.

I grabbed my camera, pajamas and all, walked outside to capture these puffy, whispy clouds, masterfully painting the skyline.

Our weekend was a Girls Day for Addy and I. We went shopping, stocked up on candy, and went to a movie. Mike and Ike's, Sugar Babies, Reeces' Peanut Butter Cups, and more. Perfect for movie viewing. We saw Monte Carlo because we're both big Selena Gomez fans. She loved it. I loved it. And we enjoyed each other. I googled Monte Carlo, and do not see that as a particular near future vacation destination. Just sayin...

Our days are finding Sarah busy and into mischief easily. Before I turn around she's torn up paper, unrolled toilet paper, eaten any non-edible particle lying around and comes back for more. So, when she sits in my lap for a short time, I want to grab the moment and enjoy the feel of her skin next to mine.

These eyes are piercing, yet dark and subtle at times.

I love their almond shape, the lashes that wisp upward to the sky, saying, "Hey, look at me."

Of course, playing with Mama's makeup brushes is a must. Although, she wasn't too keen on the bristles. But, needed to climb up the knobs of the drawers to see more goodies on the counter.

For lunch today, we made pizza muffins. Austin is the most serious in the kitchen. He loves to help out when he can.

Sarah was an expert because Miss Patty showed her how to make these at VBS.

The other night, Andy and I were drying her off from her bath when I asked, "Do you ever wonder if she misses anything about her old life?" I'd love to know what she is thinking, when she points her finger at me, spouts off some gibberish, and walks off. But, I know she loves her family. After playing, she'll stop where I'm sitting, smile, and wrap her arms around me. In the pool, she loves to hug her sister and brother, and wants to follow them and be "one of the guys." I know she knows she's changed.

My mother's coming into town for a few days to play with the kids, and let me begin working in my new classroom, setting up my new home for those who will walk through those doors. I'm looking forward to tapping into that aspect of my being. It's refreshing to start a new. I learned I would be moving buildings the week before I left for Ukraine. A friend said, " Are you crazy? A new baby, a new grade, a new school!!" For me, it's a whole new life that began with a picture of one little girl, who changed our lives forever.

The heat of July has welcomed all the doctors' appointments needed to figure out Sarah. Most were workups, but her ears caused us to visit an ENT twice, and will be back next month. I was hopeful to get an accurate hearing test last week, but it didn't happen. She was so traumatized after working on her ears, that she would not react or allow anything near her ears. She clung and sought comfort from her Mama. So, we'll head back in August. I know she hears well. She's heard me call her name at the pool and when other background noise is present. She hears me when I use a quiet voice. But, we'll see what they get.

Potty-training has been hit or miss. When I would have a day indoors, we'd try going every half-hour or longer. After sitting on the throne for quite a while and nothing, she'd get up, wash her hands, and then let it slide down her leg a mere minute or two later. "I'll show you, Mama." After a half-day of frustration for us both, I gave up and we'd try again in a few weeks. Then, she saw her friends go at Bible School. At home, she took off her diaper, sat on the potty, and went. Cheers of elation were heard in this house. If I would ask her go, she'd fuss. But, if she heard me go, she'd raise her hands and cheer!! Today, she initiated going to the potty once and cheered for herself. She's going about once a day on the throne. It won't be long:)

Andy is always the reliable and balanced one of our circle. Me, I'm up, down, and all around. I need it to feel the highs and lows. When one emotion is raging, the others are dormant. And the cycle continues. I need that roller coaster ride to live all that life's to offer. As the month of July winds down, I feel this emotion of anxiousness, panic, and I fret about the start of school. Not because she won't thrive, or will miss me. But, her school plan isn't set and won't be set until after I begin teaching. The home visits and assessments take place the week I begin my school year. There's no way around it, and we've figured some potential plan b's, knowing the plan b's will be wonderful, also. Our school system is amazing, and I know she will blossom in her classroom, experiencing so many firsts. So, I wait, squashing those emotions down that come barreling up from the depths every so often. I know "this" will all work out. It always has, but now I wait and enjoy every moment with our family.

A few sniffles, sore throats, and other summer colds have caused us to stay indoors and play during the heat wave. We're on the mend, and I'm having a Big Sister day for Addy in tomorrow. A girly movie and shopping, time for the two of us. She's a wonderful big sister, and wanted some alone time today. When I took Austin and Sarah to the library, she stayed home while Andy worked in the office and enjoyed her alone time.

Disclaimer: Sarah has plenty of clothes, but pulls the same dress out of the laundry basket after I've washed it. This morning, she had shorts and other clothes on underneath it. The reason many pictures have this checked dress in them.

Road Trip

Around this time of the summer, I get that feeling like I haven't done it all yet. School will be starting soon and it will be time to get my teacher game face on. So I want to pack as much as I can into this last month. No regrets, no "I wish", just leavin caution to the wind.

Yesterday morning, I received a text from Imogen around 8:45am as I was taking Sarah to her ENT appointment. "My planning skills are in top form this morning...Would you be interested in going to The Works in Newark? Around 9:45ish?"

Heck, yeah. So I called her and we made plans to leave as soon as our appointment was over. My text looked liked this when I pulled into our driveway..."I'm home. Give me 20 minutes..."

Enough time to change clothes, pack some snacks, diaper bags, and tell Andy we're off!! Don't know what time I'll be back. I told the kids we were going on an adventure, and they kept guessing the entire way. Until we rode into the city, "Mama, are we in Lima?" "No, Baby. But it looks like it." A quick lunch, and then we walked into this perfect, hands-on museum for our kids.

We all stepped in front of the heat-seeking machine and could see ourselves on the tv.

Some exercise and physical fitness booths, along with a Wii Fit exhibit to "try" out.

A "tear apart" a computer place, complete with safety goggles and real tools.

But their most favorite place was the Farmer's Market and dress-up pretend place.

I sat on the bench, listening to them weave their make-believe tales, and ad-libbing as they went along. The magic of make-believe and pretend, the fairy-tale land. A wonderful place for all ages. I foresee us making more trips over there in the future. (Fortune Telling is my next career:)

We're trying to stay cool in this "Can't believe how hot it is" week our country is in now. Pool, library, and more inside adventures on the horizon.

True North

From the the south, east, and west, my family followed their compass to my hometown this weekend, true north to my grandparents home for the annual summer event.

Sarah walked up the sidewalk, inside the house, and swan-dived into my family who prayed for her these last ten months, anxiously awaiting for the moment she would join our circle.

Over 50 attended this summer event, and while others were unable to make it, their spirit was felt amongst us. We ate delicious food, caught up on the family happenings, and watched the kids playing volleyball, corn-hole, and swimming in the kiddie pool.

Sitting around the kiddie pool with my aunts, cousins, and grandmother, Sarah said,"Nana" for the first time. And we all cheered in wide-eyed wonder. In eight short weeks, my little girl is saying some words.

Then, my aunt gave me a card from the entire clan for Sarah. As I read the words, then passed it around to be read, all of us became teary-eyed. They knew of our trek to bring her home. The celebrations, the hurdles, and the trials.

"Isn't it wonderful how one tiny girl can move right in and change your life forever?

She is changing lives, for anyone who learned of her story, and has watched her life unfold before our very eyes. When she does something remarkable and I'm not around, her cheering section
roots her on. Celebrating new words, new firsts, celebrating Sarah.

She's teaching us all to stop, enjoy the moment, and spread love and joy all around.

Our Big Canvas

I live with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for living and for loving. Every day, I see wonder and amazement through my little girl's eyes, and I think to myself,"What a gift I've been given."

The day Sarah stood tall, wearing her Statue of Liberty hat and raising her torch high, the symbolism was not lost on me. I researched the poem on the Statue of Liberty:

            "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
               the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
              Send these the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
            I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

She's one of those and when I share this moment, I choke up. To know from where she came to where she is now, what an unbelievable, indescribable, spectacular miracle.

We had more painting, more dancing, and our own preschool version of Stomp!

She has thrown herself into every moment with gusto and reckless abandonment, and my friends have embraced her as well. The other day, I was frustrated with trying to get her to sit during the story around 11:30am. That afternoon, I realized that I was not using the tools in my toolbox that I've learned as a teacher. She was done, and needed to move. So the next day, we went for a "run" down the hallway, she came back, and finished the art project. It's those moments that I sit back and realize that she knows her limits, and I can help her be successful when I "listen" to her.

Then, it was Family Night, with a carnival atmosphere. Sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, face-painting, and Bubbles. She stood in amazement, wondering what she should do.

The bubbles captured her fascination. She tasted, licked, and drank the water. Towards the end, it looked like a bathtub, so in she jumped with clothes and all. And I laughed, my friends laughed, and we all celebrated Sarah. My friends love my child like their own. She is loved.
My friend, Imogen, told me while I was gone, Sarah said "Water." I was in awe. She's learning every day.

What a wonderful, wild, fantastic, beautiful week we had. She's finding her place, her crayon box, and is throwing paint on her life canvas, fabulatizing it with gusto. My girl.

Tomorrow, we head to my hometown for our annual cookout. The first time my extended family will meet her. Where she'll be included in the circle of love. Her family:)

A Beautiful World

One week every summer has been devoted to Vacation Bible School from the time I was a little girl. When Andy and I began our family, the tradition continued. Our family participates and I teach in a classroom.

After our first morning of VBS, I've got Tim Myers "A Beautiful World" playing in the background, and front row seats to watch my little girl's Beautiful World evolve before my very eyes. She blossomed and loved the first times she experienced today.

The theme is Visiting New York, and each child used glue sticks to make "windows" for the buildings in New York City. Glue Sticks are a new commodity for Sarah, and she felt the urge to see how delicious they tasted:(

Next was recreation and SNACK!! This girl knows her snack and my friend created taxi cabs out of twinkies. Absolutely Adorable!!!

Jodi spent a couple hours Sunday making 60 cabs. Way to Go, Jodi!!

Of course, Ukraine most likely doesn't have twinkies, and it's typically not a staple on my grocery list, so another first for figuring out how to eat the twinkie. She dipped her head and bit straight down the middle, covering her face in tootsie roll, twinkie cake, and frosting.

Sarah is not a quick eater, so she was still sitting at the table, while her friends were playing.

But, the craziness came when I tried to clean her up. Our rotation time was over, and she ran around the room, clutching her twinkie for dear life. They had these "play tunnels" in the room, so she whisked her twinkie inside to hide from me. Picture a frantic 3 year old, grasping her twinkie, being pulled out of the tunnel by her legs. My friends were enjoying the comic relief on my behalf!!

Next was the painting project. Miss Patty demonstrated how they would be making Statue of Liberty hats, but we need to PAINT them green first. So, Sarah put on her smock, dabbed some green paint on her brush, slid it on the hat, and proceeded to paint her tongue. Surely, it must taste good?

Once she was finished, she put her hat on her head. No problem, but the paint was still wet. So, she had green streaks in her hair, and was not happy that I took her hat away to dry.

We had more gluing with a glue stick, more tasting. Finally, the end was near so we got out play dough for the kids. And more tasting by Sarah. If you've counted, she tasted glue sticks, twinkies, paint, and playdough...all within a three hour window. I'm excited for the possibilities tomorrow.

Seeing my little girl follow her friends in line, dance to the music, paint, glue, play, and SMILE...

what a beautiful world I see.

The possibilities are endless for her.

Oops, She Did It Again

The youngest is getting blamed for much these days, and rightfully so. She's hidden the remote, my book, along with other toys that we know about. "Sarah had it" is the phrase often heard around the house. My cousin posted on Facebook about her misplaced keys found in her son's toy schoolbus. I topped her story by telling how Sarah hid my wedding ring and my watch in Addy's toybin.

Come bathtime, she begins her crying episodes because she knows bedtime is soon to come. However, when she has played her heart out at the pool, belly-flopping back and forth, she's been known to fall asleep at dinner.

Tonight, we went for a walk after dinner. Addy rode her bike, and Austin pushed Sarah (a mere few feet and then he got tired).

Once in the woods, Austin and I had some fun, while the others walked on.

I love it when he'll reach for my hand to hold as we walk. I took the picture with my camera and my mind to remember these moments.

He loves cheesing it up for the cameras, with his two thumbs up.

Our latest "family" pastime is the playing of Angry Birds. Yes, it's true. Addicting:)

Next week will be more "Firsts" for Sarah. Vacation Bible School, pediatrician appointment (we've gone to an adoption clinic thus far), and a hometown family cookout.

I will be working on my new computer. This computer has been on life support since we were in Ukraine. Last week, I thought it took its final breath, but Andy worked his engineer magic and had it working so I could check email, internet, and blog. But, my new computer arrived today.

I am so excited.

My dear friend, Jenni, came over brought me this topper. She saw it and knew it was all about me.

Summer Lovin

I was listening to Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" and "Summer Wind" this morning. (Can I say how much I love Pandora Music!!!) While we aren't flying on a jet plane, and a summer breeze may flow by in the twilight hours, the blue skies and billowy clouds were calling for a mid-morning outdoor celebration. So, we obliged with a bike ride to the park, which was perfect. Minus the sidewalk construction and the humidity which hit fast and hard. But, we pressed on, amidst the trickling sweat beads and sunscreen dripping in our eyes.
